M/V Lotus

Head to Lake Union and board the M/V Lotus for afternoon tea with a view. The McMicken family built this luxurious houseboat in 1909 (it was quite state-of-the-art for its time) to travel in style between Seattle and the family’s gold mines in Alaska. Peek into the rooms (where you can still stay) and imagine yourself as a successful prospector! Then head to the covered boat deck to watch seaplanes take off before tea.

The spread here is more substantial than some others, and we enjoyed quiche and red pepper soup before tucking into a large plate of cookies and the grand finale: a signature almond cake studded with baked apples. Devoted volunteers serve tea, and proceeds benefit the Lotus Foundation, which is dedicated to the boat’s upkeep, so you can feel good about supporting a historic gem. Some gluten-free and vegan items are available upon request.

Find it: 860 Terry Ave N., Seattle, find the boat on the northeast side of the Museum of History & Industry

Hours: Second Sunday of every month, May–November, with select holiday teas in December. Afternoon tea is served at noon and 2:30 p.m. Call 425-243-9641 for reservations. Hats encouraged!

Cost: $37–$55 for an adult tea, $45 for a Tween Tea (ages 8–12), $20 for a Wee Tea (age 7 and younger)

Pro tip: If you need more time on the water, you’ll have plenty of choices in Seattle boat tours departing from the same area.

Next cup: The Lodge at St. Edward
