Blueberries on a bowl and on a table

Nothing tastes of summer quite like picking fresh blueberries, warmed by the sun. Did you know that Washington is the No. 1 producer of blueberries in the country? It’s true, and fields in Washington have recently opened for the season. Here is a handy guide to U-pick blueberry farms across Washington state. Be sure to check a farm’s website for details before heading out.

While eating blueberries straight out of the bowl is certainly one option, blueberries also make a welcome addition to many recipes. If you have a young culinary wiz in your home, you might want to check out the Washington Blueberry Commission’s blueberry recipe contest for kids ages 12–18, running Aug. 14–28. The recipe must be original, developed by a child 12–18 years old, and a photo must be submitted with the entry. See the contest website for all the details about how and when to submit.

The contest winner will receive one complimentary flat of fresh blueberries, a special layer cake from Trophy Cupcakes & Party and a $100 gift card to Trophy Cupcake & Party to use in-store or online. The winner’s recipe and photo will be posted on the Washington Blueberry website and social media pages.

So, head on out to a U-pick field, your local farmers market or even the grocery store for some blueberry inspiration to get those creative juices flowing. Best of luck to everyone!
