Position Description:
ParentMap seeks a flexible, part-time, paid intern to support the work of its Calendar Editor and Out & About Editor. The Out & About Editor and Calendar Editor form part of ParentMap's content team and cover activities, outings, events, travel, the arts, camps, classes and more for ParentMap's Northwest readership.
The Out & About intern will contribute to ParentMap's popular online and print events and activities calendar and will perform other duties as assigned. Intern will gain exposure to the workings of a fast-paced online and print media company, learn and adhere to publication standards, participate in occasional meetings, contribute content ideas (and have the opportunity to pitch editors) and learn and become an expert user in ParentMap's web publishing system.
Duties:
- Review, edit, source, update and publish events on ParentMap's online events and camps+classes calendars
- Help source and select events for ParentMap's monthly print issue activities calendar
- Become expert user of online calendar systems and make suggestions for improvements
- Employ excellent judgment while working independently and knowing when to seek guidance
- Update/create training documentation for online and print calendars, contact lists for key organizations, list of recurring weekday events by region and day and other lists/systems as assigned
- Update existing Out & About articles
- Market Out & About content as directed
- Attend training sessions and regular meetings at ParentMap WHQ (Mercer Island) or other Seattle-area locations
- Other duties as determined
Qualifications:
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Superior attention to detail, adherence to style guide and commitment to accuracy; eagle eye for typos and other errors
- Ability to manage a high number of details while grasping the big picture
- Aptitude for learning a content management system
- Ability to attend meetings in the Seattle area
- Desire to contribute to a parenting publication
Desired qualification:
- Familiarity with kid- and family-friendly activities in the Seattle area, especially on the Eastside
Conditions:
This is a part-time, paid position of approximately 8--10 hours per week. Position is primarily virtual, but requires attendance at regular in-person training meetings at the outset, and ongoing attendance at occasional trainings and staff meetings.
