Leading neuropsychiatrist Dr. Dan Siegel sweeps aside old models of 'good' and 'bad' parenting to offer a new scientific focus to the cultivation of healthy emotional and intellectual development, leading to calmer, happier, resilient children.
How we focus our attention shapes the connections in the brain. And how the brain’s connections link to one another in an integrated way directly shapes how it functions in health. An integrated brain creates a flexible, flourishing mind and compassionate, rewarding relationships. By inspiring children to focus their attention, parents and educators can provide the kind of guidance that will promote the growth of neural integration at the heart of healthy brain development, which in turn offers powerful tools to develop the emotional intelligence kids will need to be successful in the world.
Dr. Siegel is currently clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine where he is on the faculty of the Center for Culture, Brain, and Development and the Co-Director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center. An award-winning educator, he is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and recipient of several honorary fellowships. Dr. Siegel is also the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute in LA. Among his best-selling books, is Mindsight: The New Science of Personal Transformation, which presents groundbreaking thinking on the healing power of "mindsight," the potent skill that is the basis for both emotional and social intelligence. The practice of Mindsight has been found to make positive changes in our brains – and in our lives.
