Cedar River Watershed Tour with Girl Trek (Postponed)

Partnered with Girl Trek, we’re taking a hike outside in Seattle’s Municipal Watershed to see where our water comes from and explore Washington’s unique ecology. Walk through Masonry Dam, Cedar River Watershed, Chester Morse Lake, and Cedar Falls Waterfall with us on our day expedition. Travel buses are included to transport students and families to each site.

The Watershed Education Center is a gateway to the Cedar River Municipal Watershed, which provides drinking water for more than a million people in the greater Seattle area. The Center provides education, interpretation, and tours focused on the region’s unique ecology and its connection to the water supply. Wear appropriate hiking clothing, bring bug spray, water bottle, and allergy medication/inhaler if needed.

  • 9:00- Bus picks you up Tabor 100 (7100 Fort Dent Way, Tukwila WA 98188 ) 
  • 10:00- Arrive at Cedar River Watershed Ed Center 10-10:30- Bathrooms, listen to water drums, orientation to watershed at the relief map: What is a watershed; why does Seattle get its water from so far away? History of the land and acquisition by City of Seattle over the last 100 years. 10:30-10:45- Drive to Masonry Dam 
  • 10:45-11:30- Walk on Masonry Dam: Water supply; Too much (and too little) of a good thing; flood management; downstream impacts learn about floodplains, habitat restoration at Riverbend, County’s and SPU’s efforts towards reconnecting the river to its floodplain and creating salmon habitat in the greater Cedar River Watershed. 
  • 11:30-11:45- Drive to Chester Morse Lake 
  • 11:45-12:15- Lunch at picnic tables; learn about different job titles and job descriptions: Engineers, Hydrologists, Salmon Biologists, Community Outreach and Education, Social Services, etc. 
  • 12:15-12:30- Forest to Faucet activity at the tables 
  • 12:30-12:45- Drive to Cedar Falls Waterfall 
  • 12:45-1- Visit the waterfall, learn about habitat and riparian areas 
  • 1-1:15- Drive back to Education Center 1:15-1:30- Opportunity for flushing toilets if needed 
  • 1:30-2:30- Drive back to Seattle
