Family Saturdays occur on the first Saturday of every month. These programs are designed for our youngest historians—ages 2 to 8—and their families, but all ages are welcome!
Saturday, Sept. 7: Discover how history connects us all during our Family Saturdays. This month’s story is Shapes and Colors, by John Canty, a book about searching for colors in the world around us. We’ll read the book together and search for colors in In The Spirit, our annual exhibition. Then, you’ll have the chance to create your own color collage to take home.
Saturday, Oct. 5: Please note that this Family Saturdays offering has a different format than normal. The event will run from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with members of the Washington Library Association Towner Award Committee reading several books throughout the day.
Discover how history connects us all during our Family Saturdays. Join us this month to discover 2025’s Towner Award Nominees.
The Towner Award is the Washington state award for nonfiction picture books written for 2nd-6th grade students. In the spring, all Washington State students in public and independent schools, from second through sixth grades, are invited to vote for their favorite book. Student votes are submitted by school and public librarians. The Towner Awards Committee will offer multiple readings of award-winning selections between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
Saturday, Nov. 2: Discover how history connects us all during our Family Saturdays. This month’s story is Home, by Carson Ellis, a book about the many different homes people make. We’ll read the book together and spend time exploring the textures and materials of one such home, a traditional Coast Salish plank house. Then you’ll have the chance to build a model of your own home—real or imagined.
Saturday, Dec. 7: Discover how history connects us all during our Family Saturdays. This month’s story is We All Play, by Julie Flett, a book about the different ways we move our bodies when we play. We’ll read the book together and explore the History Lab to discover how kids throughout history have played. Then you’ll have the chance to create your own movement sculpture to take home.
