A Gathering of Families: A Celebration of Indigenous Culture & Art

Back by popular demand, Karshner Center will host a culture and arts festival: Gathering Families. This festival is intended to honor Native American culture, promote indigenous arts, enhance cultural awareness, promote culture competency and have fun.

Opening ceremonies are at noon with greetings from Puyallup Tribal Elder Connie McCloud and the Chief Leschi Drum & Dance Group led by Culture Teacher Teresa Harvey.

The rest of the day will include:

1:15 Sondra Simone Segundo, artist, author, singer
2:00 Haida Heritage Dancers
2:30 Tammy Woodrich, storyteller
3:15 Pow Wow dancers 
4:00 Harvest Moon, storyteller 
4:45 Raffle and closing, Honor Guard

Read-Alouds are scheduled at 12:30 pm, 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm

Ongoing craft making includes beading necklaces, weaving bookmarks, carving pictographs, and painting petroglyphs. There will be two special classes of Cattail mat making at 12:30 pm and 3:30 pm: each class is limited to 30 Cattail mats; to participate you must sign up at the door when you arrive. 

Native artists will display their artwork throughout the day: to include Makita Wilbur, Project 562, Peter Boome, Judy Bridges, Melissa Peterson, William Johnny, Vickie Era Pankretz, LaVerne Kearns, Sandra Simone and more.
