Event Picks, September 2008

Published on: September 01, 2008

Take your kids on an outing this month — and pump up the bottom line of worthy agencies that serve families.

Jammies are a must at Movies for Morningsong, a PJ-party benefit for Morningsong Early Learning Center (the only child-care center in Seattle that serves homeless toddlers and preschoolers). Your $15 gets you snacks, a seat in Ballard’s small but sweet Majestic Bay Theatre and a special screening of The Jungle Book. Saturday, Sept. 6, 9–11:30 a.m. Tickets: family-services.org.

At the much-anticipated annual Cones for Kids fund-raiser in West Seattle, proceeds from the sale of scoops of Husky Deli’s frozen finest — and a raffle for a Direct TV system — go to benefit uncompensated care at Children’s Hospital. Sunday, Sept. 7, 1–4 p.m. Alki Bathhouse, 2701 Alki Ave. S.W., Seattle.

Eastsiders, there’s something for you, too! Lay down a few bucks at an Usborne book sale and rock to Recess Monkey (1 p.m.) at the Children’s Book and Fun Fair, which benefits uncompensated care at Children’s Hospital and raises money to buy books for patients. Lots of other keep-‘em-occupied fun: stories, arts and crafts, entertainers, raffles. Sunday, Sept. 7, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Trilogy Cascade Clubhouse Ballroom, 23215 N.E. Greens Crossing Road, Redmond.

The first-ever Green Edmonds Festival can help you grapple with some of questions raised by trying to live a sustainable family life: Can you afford to eat? How green is your house, anyway? And aren’t our holiday traditions pretty wasteful? Between workshops, check out live music on a solar-powered stage and make art out of erstwhile junk with the Creation Station. Free. Saturday, Sept. 13, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Frances Anderson Playfield, 700 Main St., Edmonds. Of course you wouldn’t want to drive alone: Carpool, bus or catch a free shuttle from the former Woodway High School parking lot. Directions at greenedmonds.com.
