Flap & Explore: A Batty Adventure for All Ages

Calendar/Event Details

Wed, Aug. 28 @ 6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m.

Are you curious about urban bats in the Delridge area? Join us to create eco art and learn from local experts of these nocturnal creatures!

DNDA Eco Arts Mixed Media Activity: 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Join Delridge Neighborhood Association at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center for a unique art activity creating flapping bat mobiles to hang up in your space! This flapping bat mobile looks like it is flying as it flaps its wings over and over again with just one tug on its pull cord! Made from a few simple materials, and using pennies as weights, this is a great project for older children to make, but younger ones can do it too with a little help with parent/guardian supervision. This activity is limited to 20 people (One child + one parent = 2 people) due to limited art room space. After completing this activity, everyone is invited to walk with our team to Pigeon Point Park to meet with educators from Bats Northwest and Woodland Park Zoo to observe and learn more about bats in our region!

Bat Walk + Talk at Pigeon Point Park: 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Discover the fascinating world of bats right in our own neighborhood! We can thank bats for healthier crops, biodiversity, and resilient ecosystems. Bats are common in Washington state, including our urban areas, but their nocturnal habits often make them hard to notice. Taking the time to learn how to observe bats can change that!  DNDA is excited to partner with Bats Northwest and the Woodland Park Zoo for a special event at Pigeon Point Park from 7:15p-8:45p. Together, we'll observe local bats, listen to insights from bat experts, and record our findings to contribute to a regional bat activity map. Whether you're a seasoned wildlife enthusiast or just curious, this is a perfect opportunity to learn about local bat species and bat conservation issues in our region.
