Onion Festival at Pike Place Market

Calendar/Event Details

Wed, Aug. 14 @ 3:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m.

Don’t miss our special 117th anniversary event! Pike Place Market began with a passionate group of farmers up in arms over price-gouging middlemen in the early 1900s. The ubiquitous onion that had skyrocketed in price became their rallying symbol, and with it they drummed up the city’s support for a place to sell directly to customers. On August 17, 1907, a handful of wagons filled with fresh produce rolled up the street and Pike Place Market officially opened. On this day, we celebrate their enduring legacy of the “Meet the Producer” tradition 117 years later.
