About the Play
“This brawl today… shall send, between the red rose and the white, a thousand souls to death and deadly night.”
England is weakened by the death of Henry V as war breaks out in France. Joan of Arc, savior of the French, leads a rebellion against the English and battles with England’s Lord Talbot as he attempts to protect the legacy of his late king. Back in England, power struggles for control of the throne ignite the bloody conflict that will blossom into the Wars of the Roses. Allegiances are made, battle lines are drawn, and wars are fought, but only one man gets to wear the crown.
This is the first chapter in Shakespeare’s Wars of the Roses, which ends with Richard III, and the fifth installment of the History plays, which GreenStage began in 2017 with Richard II.
