The traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe, Hōkūleʻa, is set to visit Seattle and Tacoma. The tentative schedule is for Hōkūleʻa to be in Seattle on August 26th and arrive in Tacoma August 30-September 1.
On August 29th, come to the Science Dome to learn about Hōkūleʻa in the planetarium show Wayfinders: Waves, Winds, and Stars and visit the canoe while it is in town! During this event we will be showing the video free of charge at 11 am, 11:30 am, noon, 5 pm, 5:30 pm and 6 pm. There will also be free hands-on science activities outside of the dome 11 am - 12:30 pm AND 5 pm -6:30 pm. Register for the free planetarium show and drop in for activities before or after the video.
In Wayfinders: Waves, Winds, and Stars, learn how to read the stars and interpret the wind and waves as we follow the story of Hawaii’s Polynesian Voyaging Society and their efforts to recover the nearly lost techniques of traditional Polynesian navigation aboard the double-hulled canoe Hōkūleʻa. Fulldome footage and animation blend together to take viewers aboard Hōkūleʻa and demonstrate how ancient wayfinders were able to navigate halfway across the world without the use of modern instruments. Produced by Bishop Museum in collaboration with Polynesian Voyaging Society and 1001 Stories.
