In the whirlwind of activity before the kids go back to school, I invite you to make time this weekend for the simplest of summer activities: visiting a playground. There’s a brand-new one that will have your kids completing an obstacle course much like the one on “American Ninja Warrior.” They’ll want to go back every weekend! If you’re looking for a more traditional playground experience, these 9 hidden-gem parks should climb to the top of your list.
And what better way to fuel all that playtime than with free food? I’ve rounded up a dozen restaurants that offer free (or super cheap) kids meals.
My top 10 weekend events bring more late-summer fun with outdoor dance classes, block parties, and glowing boats out on the water.
Immersive Gamebox Grand Opening

Whether your family wants to jump across lava, outsmart aliens or fight robots, this brand-new gaming spot is the place to do it. There are 15 adventures to choose from, and you’ll step right inside the game with touchscreen walls and interactive elements. Work together as a family to complete the challenges! U-District K-Pop and Hip-Hop Dance Classes

Location: U District Station, Northeast 43rd Street and Brooklyn Avenue Northeast, Seattle
This free summer series hosted by PopRox Dance Studio and The U District Partnership is a fun and laid-back way to try out dance classes, but there are just two more weeks left. Spend this Friday evening learning K-pop moves. (And come back Friday, Sept. 4 for hip-hop dance classes!)
Lantern Paddle
Date: Friday, Aug. 28
Cost: Free
Location: Foss Waterway Seaport, 705 Dock St., Tacoma
This annual event lights up Thea Foss Waterway with glowing lanterns and decorated boats, all to raise awareness for threatened marine species. Bring your paddlecraft (and life jacket) to get out on the water, or admire the glowing lanterns from the dock. You can also make a lantern, listen to music, and visit the museum and touch tanks.
Panda Fest
Date: Friday–Sunday, Aug. 28–30
Cost: $15; ages 5 and younger are free
Location: Seattle Center Fisher Pavilion, 305 Harrison St., Seattle
One of the biggest outdoor Asian food festivals in the U.S. is coming back to Seattle this weekend! There will be cultural performances, delicious food and fun activities the whole family will love. In addition to more than 60 Asian food vendors (and 200 street foods to try!), you can expect panda inflatables, face painting and bounce houses. Tickets also include a panda pin and headband.
The Evergreen State Fair
Date: Friday–Sunday, Aug. 28–30
Cost: $5–$16; ages 5 and younger are free
Location: Evergreen State Fairgrounds, 14405 179th Ave. S.E., Monroe
It wouldn’t be the end of summer without at least one day at the fair. The annual Evergreen State Fair celebrates the area’s agricultural traditions. This year, you can expect racing pigs, axe-throwing lumberjacks, live music and more. Don’t miss the Monroe Fair Days Parade on Saturday!
Waterfront Block Party 2026
Date: Saturday, Aug. 29
Cost: Free
Location: Pier 62, 1951 Alaskan Way, Seattle
It’s easy to spend a whole day on the Seattle Waterfront, and this annual block party celebrates just that. There will be live music, dancing, special activities and more along Pier 62, the Salish Steps and Pier 58. Take in sweeping views of Elliott Bay, pop into local businesses and plan for an ice cream stop (my daughter’s favorite).
Hilltop Street Fair
Date: Saturday, Aug. 29
Cost: Free
Location: People’s Park, 1100 S. Ninth St., Tacoma
Speaking of ice cream, you’ll find quite a few sweets and treats at this neighborhood street fair. Kids can burn off the sugar rush in the play area and bounce houses. There will also be live entertainment, vendor booths and beer gardens.
Wild First Year at Cougar Mountain Zoo
Date: Saturday–Sunday, Aug. 29–30
Cost: Included with admission ($18 adult; $15 child)
Location: Cougar Mountain Zoo, 19525 S.E. 54th St., Issaquah
It’s been a wild year at Cougar Mountain Zoo, and lion cubs Kimari, Zella and Kemba are celebrating their first birthday. The cubs will get special birthday enrichment and other surprises, with family-friendly activities throughout the zoo.
Proctor Food Fest
Date: Sunday, Aug. 30
Cost: Free; food for purchase
Location: Proctor District, North 27th and North Proctor Street, Tacoma
Local food makers are gathering for this annual summer fest, and you won’t want to miss the chance to try them all in one place! From gyros and pizza to macarons and Hawaiian shave ice, there’s something for every palate. Plus, there’s a full lineup of local musicians taking the stage.
Summer Thunder – Taiko at Kubota Garden
Date: Sunday, Aug. 30
Cost: Free
Location: Kubota Garden, 9817 55th Ave. S., Seattle
You’ll want to pack a picnic for this lively afternoon. Things kick off with a dance performance at the garden entrance, followed by taiko performances on the terrace. Buy a raffle ticket for your chance at special themed prizes.
