There’s something about spring in Seattle. The cherry blossoms and tulips bloom, days stretch a little longer and everyone’s itching to get outside. If your family’s looking for a fun and meaningful way to enjoy the season, Seattle Spring Together might be just the thing. From neighborhood cleanups to learning how to compost like a pro, this two-month citywide campaign offers hands-on activities that will get kids moving, thinking and giving back — all while making our neighborhoods a little greener and cleaner.
What is Seattle Spring Together?
Seattle Spring Together is a program hosted by Seattle Public Utilities (SPU). This annual event, in support of Mayor Harrell’s One Seattle vision, provides a variety of volunteer and learning opportunities from April 1 through May 31. For many events, SPU provides all the tools and supplies, all you have to do is show up. Events are open to everyone — individuals, families and kids (students can even earn service hours for participating). Some classes are offered in the evenings, while neighborhood cleanups generally take place during the day on weekends.
How can families get involved?
Activities and classes are listed on the Seattle Spring Together website with topics including:
- Tree care
- Sustainable gardening
- Growing food
- Composting
- How to attract bees and butterflies to your garden
- Water-wise gardening
- Neighborhood cleanup events
- Recycling events
Events take place all over Seattle, allowing lots of folks the opportunity to participate close to home. Cleanups are currently scheduled for the Mount Baker, First Hill, Othello, Uptown, Capitol Hill, Roosevelt, Central District, Beacon Hill, Leschi, Lake City, Little Saigon, Madison Park and Chinatown/International District neighborhoods. Some locations have more than one cleanup date scheduled, as detailed on the Seattle Spring Together website.
Whether you’ve got a toddler who loves digging in the dirt or a teen who needs service hours, Seattle Spring Together has something for every family. It’s simple, fun and you can make a real difference in your community. So gather the kiddos and get ready to connect with your neighbors, city and the planet.
